This past weekend I met up with Claire and John in the charming little town of Gruene, Texas for their engagement session. If you’ve ever been to Gruene, you know it’s full of character—brick streets, rustic storefronts, and the historic Gruene Hall. What we didn’t realize when we planned their session was that Gruene was buzzing with activity that evening: a concert at the hall and a high school homecoming dinner nearby. Let’s just say, it was a lively backdrop for photos, but I embraced it and let it challenge my creativity!

I went for more intimate shots and took advantage of all of the rustic charm and places around town that had character and were easy for me to manipulate with so many people around.

Midway through, sweaty and running out of ideas with the crowds around us, I decided to improvise—ducking into the Gruene General Store to cool off with some cold Mexican Cokes.
Those cokes ended up being the perfect touch to the session. Originally, Claire & John had envisioned coffee house vibes with some inspo that gave a “fly on the wall” feel. So I used what we had around us to give a similar vibe, just with more of that Texas charm.

By the time we made it back toward the hall, the crowds had thinned out and the sun had softened. It felt like the town had finally exhaled, giving us space to slow down and wrap up their session with some fun, playful portraits behind Gruene Hall.

This session was the perfect reminder that sometimes the best photos come from unexpected detours—whether it’s grabbing sodas in a crowded general store or leaning into the joy of the moment, no matter what’s happening around you. Claire and John rolled with it all, and their gallery is full of laughter, warmth, and love.
